一、 盛夏的御影堂外
各種不適逐漸淡去，現在他被一種難以形容的重量拉扯，好像高飛球落入等待的手套，被牢牢掌控。野球選手本身也有被接殺的時候嗎？他彷彿從五十公尺高處急速下墜，下方野手臉面不清，高舉手臂大張紅棕色手套，日光下亮得刺眼。墜入那既亮又暗的空間之前有人叫他，極熟悉的聲音，但他已經無法回應。
Kilang, Kilang……。
他睜開眼睛。
映入眼簾的是壯觀的飛檐和厚重的青灰屋瓦，還有一株壯闊的銀杏樹，投下寬廣的蔭影。樹蔭外，深色地面被太陽炙烤滾燙，蒸騰熱氣微微扭曲眼前景物，他卻絲毫感受不到熱。

那天早上，巳之吉也和茂作一同入山。
巳之吉年方十八，是住武藏國的樵夫，除了除夕和大年初一全年無休，過著不斷伐木、運木的生活。他侍奉的主人茂作是名嚴格又沉默的男性，但作為樵夫，他的本事無可挑剔，巳之吉很仰慕他，喚他為叔父。
不過這幾年，茂作一下子蒼老了不少。相對地，巳之吉不斷長高，去年夏天總算追過了茂作。他的相貌還保有一丁點稚氣，不過身體因持續從事嚴苛的山間勞動，變得如橡木般結實，皮膚在冬天也曬得黝黑，氣色很好。他的眼神如老鷹般率直、靈動，即使過著貧窮的生活，精神依舊煥發。當年被家裡送出去工作時，他還是個瘦小的孩童，連鐮刀都拿不好，如今已成了健壯的美青年。...
