fembooks, the first feminist bookstore in Chinese community, was established on April 17, 1994, mainly by a group of activists and supporters of the Awakening Foundation, the first women's movement organization in Taiwan.
fembooks sells books by women, about women and for women with a huge variety of topics such as autobiographies, theories of women's/gender studies, sexualities, art, novels, poetry and so on. In 1996, fembooks expanded her business to publishing. The first book published is The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Since then, fembooks has published more than 60 books; they are divided into six categories: "herstory", "fembooks", "young girls", "gender education", "lesbian and gay" and "men's studies". Besides selling and publishing books, fembooks is holding all kinds of activities year round, the most popular one being the classes of "trends and theories of feminisms". Over the years, scores of scholars, writers, directors, painters and activists, local and international, are invited to share their works and experiences. As the cultural dimension of women's movement, fembooks has created a legacy for women and all the people who believe in women's creativity and gender equality.
